A Journey of earth, fire, water, and devotion.
While creating ceramics is a new endeavor for me, having a degree in Archaeology has given me an appreciation of the timelessness and history of pottery and the ceramic arts and a lifelong fascination learning the processes, styles and uses of ancient artistic methods to enrich our lives and create utilitarian items of beauty and devotional significance.
Currently this is the beginning of my journey. I am taking the steps to refine my skills and learn the techniques. The work that I am displaying currently are all steps along my path to the work that I see in my future.
Ceramics to me, hold an almost infinite artistic and practical creative potential. As a devotional polytheist, my relationship with the Gods, spirits, and ancestors involve a lot of offerings. Offerings of food, of drink, of artwork, of service all help create the tapestry of connection that I have built in my life and practice. Devotional vessels, offering bowls, plates and cups, are the very real items that hold those offerings for me in that practice.
As a cook and a homebody, I understand the value of and love felt for a favorite bowl or coffee mug, a personal item that gets used every day for that ritual of solace that a warm drink or bowl of homemade food that is so important for our comfort and well being.
Where is this dream leading me?
One of my goals is to transition into making devotional art full time for a living. As I get older I would like my life to be filled with travel to sacred sites, the creation of meaningful, devotional art, and the ability to share it with my community.
Another of my goals is to make beautiful practical pieces that people can use everyday in their lives. Small pieces of art that can hold our drinks and nourishment and become cherished parts of our days and lives.
I envision making pieces that are devotional in nature. Works of art that are dedicated to the Gods and provide vessels for our offerings and prayers. For these pieces my goal is to travel to sacred sites and collect soil, water, and plants that can be incorporated into the work and provide connection to the sites and the entities that reside there and to fire those pieces in dedicated rituals.
Overall, my goal is to fuse my spirituality and devotional practice into my art and create items that people will love and cherish throughout their lives and will bring them joy, solace, and connection with the rich world of the Gods, spirits, and ancestors that flows around us.
